EN 1.4404 material (stainless steel X2CrNiMo17-12-2) is a low-carbon version of 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2), the maximum carbon content is only 0.03%, while 1.4401 is 0.07% maximum, so the weldability and corrosion resistance of 1.4404 stainless steel is better than 1.4401. The chemical composition of material 1.4404 and 1.4401 contain molybdenum (Mo), while EN 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10) and 1.4307 (X2CrNi18-9) do not. Molybdenum improves the heat resistance of steel and resists pitting and crevice corrosion in environments containing chlorides or other halides.

Compared to stainless steel 1.4401, it can be easily welded using a variety of conventional welding methods due to its extremely low carbon content and does not require annealing after welding.
Material 1.4404 can not be hardened by heat treatment but can be hardened by cold working.
1.4404 material is normally firstly processed into many intermediate products such as square steel, round steel, sheet steel, steel strip, steel rods and other forms of steel bars, etc., and then processed into finished products such as pipe fittings, angle steel, stainless steel wire mesh, decorative fabrics, filter element, filter cartridges, flanges, valves, elbows, watch straps, etc. are widely used in aerospace, petrochemical, architectural decoration, and daily necessities industries.
EN 1.4404 stainless steel (material X2CrNiMo17-12-2) is equivalent to the American standard ASTM AISI SAE; ISO, Japanese JIS and the Chinese GB standard (for reference).
